"The Constitutional Politics of Islam in Liberal States. Integrating Muslims in Canada and France”
Abstract: Public debate on the inclusion of Muslims has erupted in many liberal democracies, and has called into question the understanding of citizenship and national identity. But, how is the regulation of Islam transforming the way liberal States include minorities? Drawing on two contrasting case studies, France and Canada, I show that their regimes of inclusion present tensions between normative principles and policy implementation as well as differences in their treatment of ethnic and religious minorities. I demonstrate how the challenge of the inclusion of Muslims and the constitutional politics it triggered has led to major, albeit different, transformations in each case.
