Featuring ABF Faculty Fellow Professor Christopher Schmidt
"The Sit-Ins: Protest and Legal Change in the Civil Rights Era"
Professor Schmidt will preview his forthcoming book, in which he tells the story of the lunch counter sit-in demonstrations that swept across the South in 1960 and the national debate they sparked over the meaning of the Constitution's requirement that all Americans receive equal protection of the laws. He will explore a series of under-appreciated legal dilemmas that lie behind the now iconic scenes of African American college students sitting in quiet defiance at whites-only lunch counters--dilemmas about the meaning of equality, the capacity of legal institutions to remedy different forms of injustice, and the relationship between legal reform and social change.

Cancellations will be honored up to Monday, September 11, 2017.
