When Your Church Foments Hate:
Speech Rights, Religious Freedom, & the Westboro Baptist Church, 1964 - 2011
This presentation will introduce the audience to the surprisingly complex backstory behind the emergence of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, as a national voice opposing gay rights, abortion, and divorce in the last half century. The church’s leader, the fiery Rev. Fred W. Phelps, Esq., blended law, civil rights advocacy, and inflexible Calvinism to create one family’s single-minded obsession with (and “ministry” to) America’s moral depravity. Over time, Phelps and his adult children converted the lessons they learned from decades representing plaintiffs in race, sex, and religious discrimination cases to a nearly impermeable legal shield for the WBC. The church masterfully parlayed its public protests at military funerals into a landmark First Amendment decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2011.
Cancellations will be honored through Friday, May 18, 2018.
