The Australian Government has appointed Mr. Don Slesnick as its new Honorary Consul in Miami.

Mr. Slesnick is a prominent local lawyer and community leader, who in 2011 concluded ten years as the Mayor of Coral Gables. He is a Vietnam veteran, former U.S. Army advisor to NATO forces in Germany and now serves the Chief of the Army Reserve as one of his civilian 'Ambassadors'. Mr. Slesnick currently holds office as the Chair of the American Bar Foundation Fellows and is the 2nd Vice Chair of the Orange Bowl Committee.

The strong relationship between Australia and Florida will be further enhanced by the appointment of Mr. Slesnick. Of the over 1.2 million Australians who travel annually to the United States, around 160,000 travel to Florida as their primary destination. Florida is regarded as the cruise capital of the world, with the ports of Miami and Fort Lauderdale handling over eight million passengers a year. Florida, the fourth most populous state in the US, is also a growing hub for high tech, financial and banking services.

In his new position, Mr. Slesnick will have responsibility for providing consular assistance to Australians living in and visiting Florida and enhancing trade, economic, investment, educational and cultural linkages.

Mr. Slesnick officially commenced his duties as Australia's Honorary Consul on May 1, 2014.
