
Steve R. Miller is an equity partner at McCarthy, Leonard & Kaemmerer out of their Kansas City office. His practice focuses on the construction industry, but he is first and foremost a trial lawyer and, as such, handles cases in the areas of general business, class action, civil rights, labor, employment, real estate, legal and accountancy malpractice, products liability, personal injury. He is a member of the American Bar Association’s Forum on the Construction Industry and of the Construction Lawyers Society of America.
Q: What does being an ABF Fellow mean to you?
A: I am thrilled to be able to financially support the profession that has been so good to me – by promoting the highest quality research regarding the rule of law and our democratic institutions.
Q: Where do you consider your home town and what is your favorite thing about it?
A: Kansas City is the Heart of America. It is a very manageable sized city with everything you would want to enrich life: sports, music and the arts, plus tree-lined streets, fountains and parks.
Q: Why did you decide to pursue a career in law?
A: The law provided me with an opportunity to make a difference in the world in the very noble endeavor of seeking peace and just outcomes.
Q: Who is your professional hero?
A: My father who had and unquenched passion for the law and practiced for over 60 years until the day he died.
Q: If you hadn’t pursued a career in law, what would you have done?
A: Physician.
Q: What do you do in your free time?
A: All manner of athletic endeavors: snow skiing, hiking, tennis, platform tennis, pickleball, core training, yoga and Pilates.
Q: Anything else you’d like to share with us?
A: I am happily married with two daughters who reside in Chicago and New York City. I am the oldest of nine children. I keep up daily with my 92-year-old mother lives four blocks from me and is enjoying her 30 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
