"LGBT Rights, Social Change, and the Dynamics of Sexual Migration: The Mexican Case"
Abstract: During the past decade, Mexicans have enacted explicit policies and legislation that seek to provide equal rights to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered citizens. Those policies, which include the recent approval of gay marriage in Mexico City, reflect considerable socio-cultural changes in attitudes toward homosexuality. However, some numbers of Mexican gay people continue to migrate to the United States for sexual reasons, and a subset of them pursue a permanent immigrant status through asylum claims. In this talk, Dr. Carrillo examines the causes behind Mexicans’ sexual migration and discusses the increasing complications of asylum as a legalization strategy for Mexican gay immigrants.
