Barbara J. Howard, Patron Fellow, Becomes ABA President at 2026 Annual Conference

August 19, 2026

Barabara J. Howard, Patron Fellow, assumed the role of president of the ABA for a one-year term that will conclude in August 2027. Part of Howard’s mission during her term as president is for the ABA to be committed to seeing fair and free elections this November, namely by protecting voting rights and educating the public about their right to vote.

She first became involved with the ABA through the Young Lawyers Division, and has been involved in the House of Delegates, the Board of Governors, and the ABA Journal Board of Editors. In both 2023 and 2024, she served as chair of the ABA Day in Washington and served most recently as advisory commission member of the ABA’s Task Force for American Democracy and as a member of the ABA Strategic Planning Committee.

In addition to being a member of the ABA and similar organizations, Howard is also a former president and board member of the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA) and of the Cincinnati Bar Association. She is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of Xavier University and chaired Xavier’s Presidential Search Committee from 2019 to 2021. In 2013, she received the Ohio Bar Medal, which is the highest honor from the OSBA.
