Professor Daniel W. Linna, Fellow, has released a study published by The Sedona Conference and the New York City Bar, titled “Artificial Intelligence in Federal Courts: A Random-Sample Survey of Judges.” The study has been cited by the Washington Post, Reuters, the ABA Journal, and Bloomberg Law. The study was led by Linna and Professor V.S. Subrahmanian, who received over 100 responses from their study population about large language models and “AI for Law” tools.
The survey asked the participants about their current use of AI tools, judicial use cases, and perspectives on AI’s potential impact on the judiciary. Out of the judges who responded to the survey, more than 60% reported using at least one of these AI for Law tools in their judicial work, while about 38% have never used any of the tools in their work.
Professor Linna has a joint appointment at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and McCormick School of Engineering as the Director of Law and Technology Initiatives and a Senior Lecturer. He is also an affiliated faculty member at CodeX – The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics and previous taught at Michigan State University College of Law, and was a visiting professor Bucerius Law School, and IE Law School.
