About American Bar Foundation

The American Bar Foundation (ABF) is the nation's leading research institute for the empirical study of law. An independent, nonprofit organization for more than sixty years, ABF seeks to advance the understanding and improvement of law through research projects of unmatched scale and quality on the most pressing issues facing the legal system in the United States and the world.

ABF is committed to broad dissemination of research findings to the organized bar, scholars, and the general public.  The results of ABF research projects are published in a wide range of forums, including leading academic journals, law reviews, and academic and commercial presses.

ABF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. ABF does not provide external grants; in the course of collaborative research efforts with other institutions, ABF does not pay indirect costs. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in faculty and doctoral fellow publications are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the American Bar Foundation.

Primary funding for the ABF is provided by the American Bar Endowment.

The mission of the American Bar Foundation is to serve the legal profession, the public, and the academy through empirical research, publications, and programs that advance justice and the understanding of law and its impact on society.
