“On Gacaca Courts in Rwanda and Transitional Justice”

Between 2005-2012, Rwandan Gacaca courts, (a form of transitional justice) tried thousands of genocide perpetrators and offered sentence reductions in exchange for a guilty plea confession and a public apology to genocide survivors and the nation. This presentation, based on ethnographic research conducted in the wake of these trials, will reflect on the socio-political effects of enacting justice at this scale using this method.
