Our time in Phoenix began with the Fellows CLE on Friday afternoon, with a presentation from ABF Research Professor Christopher Schmidt and a discussion with Paul M. Smith, Senior Advisor to the Campaign Legal Center and was moderated by National Fellows Chair-Elect and Professor at UC Irvine School of Law Mario Barnes. Read more about the CLE here and check out the audio recording and photos below.
That night, the Fellows came together at Mission Concepción for the 70th Annual Fellows Awards Reception and Banquet. Fellows were able to tour the UNESCO World Heritage site and learn more about the Mission during the cocktail hour in the Visitors Center. As the Awards Banquet got started, the Fellows honored Dean William C. Hubbard with the Outstanding Service Award, Professor Rachel F. Moran with the Outstanding Scholar Award, and Stephen A. Bain and Joi G. Kush of Colorado with the Outstanding State Chair Award. You can read Dean Hubbard’s remarks here.
After the Awards Presentation, National Fellows Chair Jennifer Parent was joined by Innocence Project exoneree and author of “The Jailhouse Lawyer,” Calvin Duncan. They spoke about Duncan’s efforts in prison to teach himself the law, beginning with his “Motion for a Law Book,” his eventual exoneration and release from prison, and how he became a lawyer and Orleans Parish Criminal Clerk of Court.

On Saturday morning, the Fellows tour a narrated cruise through San Antonio’s rich history, from La Villita, the city’s first neighborhood past the Old Mill Crossing where Teddy Roosevelt led his Rough Riders. They learned about the city’s architecture and points of interest such as Selena’s Bridge and The Briscoe Western Art Museum, as well as fascinating facts about our host city’s history.
The fun continued Saturday night, with the Fellows Reception at Boudro’s Texas Bistro on the Riverwalk. Fellows had a chance to connect with colleagues from across the map, while enjoying margaritas, guacamole made fresh in the reception area, music from local artists, and a patio balcony that overlooked the Riverwalk. Photos can be found below from the event!

Fellows events were still going Sunday night, with the Life Fellow Champagne Toast, co-sponsored by Dean Cynthia Nance and the University of Arkansas Law School, where Fellows were able to hear from Dean Nance. Following the Toast, the beloved Fellows Sing-Along, generously sponsored by Visionary Fellow Jo Ann Engelhardt, ended the night!
