March 06, 2026

Richard A. Bierschbach, Life Fellow, was elected unanimously to serve as the 14th president of Wayne State University. He has served as the University’s interim president since Sept. 17, 2025, and prior to this had served for 8 years as the dean of Wayne State Law School.

During his time as dean of the law school, he led the development and launch of several innovative programs, including an online master of studies in law for non-lawyers, an interdisciplinary holistic defense program with the WSU School of Social Work, and interdisciplinary undergraduate major and minor in law. Prior to his time at Wayne State, he served as vice dean and professor at Yeshiva University’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

President Bierschbach’s research and teaching focused on criminal law and procedure, administrative law and regulation, and corporate governance. Before joining academia, he clerked for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor of the U.S. Supreme Court and was a Bristow Fellow in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Solicitor General.
