The Econometric Society has awarded James Heckman and co-authors Flavio Cunha and Susanne M. Schennach the 2014 Frisch Medal. The medal is awarded every two years for an article published in the journal Econometrica during the past five years.
The winning paper, published in May 2010, is titled, “Estimating the Technology of Cognitive and Noncognitive Skill Formation.” The paper analyzes the development of cognitive skills and personality traits throughout the stages of childhood and identifies critical periods in a child’s development. The authors found that some skills are more easily acquired during certain stages, which matters for teaching skills at the optimal time.
The awarding committee said of the paper, “It is a powerful demonstration of the value of formal methods in elucidating policy questions of the highest importance.”
The award will be presented at the European Summer meeting this August in Toulouse, France.
