Hon. Dennis W. Archer is the 2018-19 Recipient of the ABF Fellows Outstanding Service Award

CHICAGO, Dec. 19, 2018 — The Hon. Dennis W. Archer, Chair Emeritus of Dickinson Wright PLLC and CEO of Dennis W. Archer PLLC, will receive the 2019 Outstanding Service Award from the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation at its 63rd Annual Fellows Awards Reception and Banquet on Saturday, January 26, 2019. The banquet is one of several events being hosted by the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation during the Midyear Meeting of the American Bar Association (ABA) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chief Justice Michael Douglas of the Supreme Court of Nevada will deliver keynote remarks.
The Outstanding Service Award is given annually to a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation who has, in his or her professional career, adhered for more than 30 years to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession and to the service of the public.
Archer was elected an Associate Justice on the Michigan State Supreme Court in 1986. He was elected Mayor of Detroit in 1994 and during his two terms in office worked successfully to lower unemployment and initiate over $20.2 billion worth of new projects in city development. While mayor, Archer was named "Public Official of the Year" by Governing magazine and one of the "25 Most Dynamic Mayors in America" by Newsweek Magazine.
Archer has served on numerous professional associations, including as President of the American Bar Association from 2003-2004, the National Bar Association, Wolverine Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan and the National League of Cities. He is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and Michigan State Bar Foundation. Archer has also served on the Board of Directors for TopBuild, Alix Partners, MASCO Corporation, Johnson Controls Inc., and Compuware Corporation.
His numerous leadership awards include: the 2016 American Bar Association Medal, being listed in Best Lawyers in America, and being named "Most Respected Judge in Michigan" by Michigan Lawyers Weekly in 1990, among the "100 Most Powerful Attorneys in the United States" by the National Law Journal in 1985, and among the "100 Most Influential Black Americans" by Ebony Magazine in 1984.
